Another death of a classic old time Bluegrass and Opry star, Charlie Collins, age 78 of a stroke. For 25 years he was the guitarist for Roy Acuff/ Smokey Mountain Boys.After Roy's death in 1992 he joined up with bandmate Bashful Brother Oswald (Dobro) and for 10 years played the Opry as a duo. After Oswald's death in 2002 he continued the Opry as a single act (played as recently as last Saturday). Charlie's licks on the D-18 accompanied by Oswald's Dobro was one of the most recognizable sounds in music for over 50 years. R.I.P. Charlie Collins.

Doug and Linda Pitney are hosting the 2012 Grillbillie New Year's gathering, a.k.a., the 5th New Year’s Great Swamp Jam Weekend, at their home in Chatham, NJ. On Friday evening the 30th, we are again organizing a jam session that brings bluegrass musicians from around the tri-state area together to mix and mingle, and play some music together.

Gosh, so much hospitalization and illnesses going around lately.. My sincere thoughts of recovery and love to everyone... Our family circle should remain "Unbroken" , but I would like to see this illness and heartbreak circle be "Broken".

Wow, I've been away from both this site and FB. Louanne & Suzanne, I am sorry for your loss. More sad news; Sue Cunningham (Hickory Fest)has been diagnosed with lung cancer and beginning treatment soon. I haven't been on FB yet but Jeff tells me he set up a prayer circle for her. Please pray for my brother as well. He is a severe alcoholic and suffered a seizure Thursday in an attempt to quit drinking on his own which has left him unable to walk and some brain damage, all still being evaluated for best treatment. Our family has been dealing with his illness for years, he is only 46. I will not be posting this on FB, this is among 'us'. I feel bad for Heather and her boyfriend as well, let's all pray for them too. LOTS of prayers to go around.

Boyfriend's name is Corey and he suffered a broken right leg, both top and bottom. They both suffered the usual "road rash" as they say. I think he faired better than Heather, if you want to put it that way. Neither faired well in my book, when a body meets a 2000 pound vehicle, which by the way, was a Saturn sedan.
On a new note, Heather may be getting out of ICU as early as tomorrow and getting moved to a room. I believe that is a good sign as we all know it. Mike and Donna (mom & dad) are breathing a little easier with that news.

Some of the younger Grillbillies may find the Grillbillies website as inactive (since the majority of their communication is through Facebook) or stale (because the website has not been updated on a regular basis). I, for one, take no shame in using Facebook.
My life is hectic, too. I don't appreciate the inference that one person's life realities are reason for consideration over mine or anyone else's. Received this sad news last night:
Bluegrass and country music has lost another great.
It will not be the same.
We are sorry to report that Nashville songwriter Harley Allen passed away this morning. He had been diagnosed recently with a stage 4 cancer.
Harley was the son of bluegrass legend Red Allen, and performed with his siblings and his dad for many years. He had written songs recorded by a great many country and bluegrass artists.

Grillbillie style, bluegrass picking party at our new house in Baltimore.
Eat-Drink-Pick-Repeat. All weekend! Come anytime from Friday thru
...Sunday afternoon...stay as long as you like.
We have about 4 extra bedrooms with plenty of space for your inflatable mattresses. We also have room out back for some tents and room on our side street for a small RV or two (please let us know in advance so we can make arrangements with our neighbors).
Events going on around the Baltimore area that weekend include: Bourbon, Beer, BBQ Festival in Timonium (20 minutes away) on Saturday and Orioles Opening Day on Monday. Events can be found online. Also, in DC that weekend is the Cherry Blossom Festival (1.5 hours with traffic).
All are welcome (children, parents, friends). If we missed anybody on the event invite (or somebody doesn't have Facebook), please pass along the invitation.

The Wilmington Winter Bluegrass Festival is fast approaching. There are lots of rooms left at the special rate of $89/night. Here's what you must do: Call the Hotel Front Desk at 1-302-792-2700. (Holiday Inn Select Wilmington Brandywine, 630 Naaman’s Rd., Claymont, DE 19703). When you call, tell them that you do not want to be transferred to "Reservations". Tell them that the front desk needs to book your room for the special "Wintergrass rate" of $89/night. If you let them transfer you to “reservations” they’ll tell you that the festival block rooms are sold out. They are wrong!! The other one who is on the receiving end who got offended should forgive when someone is saying that they are truly sorry and that they were wrong and work on the relationship. Well we couldn't have asked for better weather. What a pleasant weekend. Thank you Woodstown! Thank you Ricky and the Grillbillie Hall Chorus on Sunday night, that was a pleasure to listen to from my warm & snuggly bed! Thank you to everyone who chipped in (that includes $, sweat and food) and made our feast a success. It might seem overwhelming, but somehow the work gets done when everyone helps out. Thanks to all the guys who slaved over those dangerously hot oil pits! Their job was more difficult because the Fresh Turkeys turned out to be frozen in the center. That resulted in some raw spots but I think we got 'em. Fresh is supposed to be NOT frozen so we will have to make sure that doesn't happen again next year. Next stop is Heritage Fest and/or Lana and Al's Autumn Fest. xoxo

I received this email today. Let's keep James King in our prayers.
Good morning everyone,
My heart is heavy this morning typing this out for all of James' friends and
fans. My best friend was admitted into Dan ville Regional Medical Center
yesterday for blood clots in his lungs and leg. I am sorry to inform everyone
that he will be in the hospital until the clots have dissolved and his blood
work is back to normal. Everyone needs prayer, and James needs your prayers at
this time. Anyone wanting to send well wishes are welcome to do so, via our
post office box (P.O. Box 10179) in Danville, Virginia 24543. His condition
is stable at this point, but still very serious. He is not taking phone calls,
nor visitors until the infection and clotting subsides. I will appreciate
everyone's thoughts, prayers, and concerns during his recovery.

OK Laurel on the Sam's club oil, But I have always used Peanut oil, 2 yrs ago both Ernie and I came with 5 gallons of it each... and ok I did mean the reg oil is pretty brown and burnt after one to 3 birds.

SURPRISE --out of the blue comes a call from daughter Kathleen (from reading my note 8 /24 on Facebook) and saying "SURE- ADD ONE (Acme list/$20.00) donated from Kathleen (Flynn-Blevins) Parsons and Andy Parsons--parents of Joshua (grandson 5 &1/2) and new grandson Drew (6 mos.) Kathleen and Andy attended last year as Sunday day people and were impressed how a core group of 60 Grillbillie volunteers fed Thanksgiving to 375-400 (?) people. Add ONE MORE TURKEY to the volunteer count.

Last year we used 3 fryers and vegetable oil. Oil wasn't pretty after about three birds, but heck of a lot cheaper than peanut oil, which isn't good for some folks anyway. I'll bring my fryer again, and some vegetable oil. Thanks Fred, yes, the breasts would of been 8-9 pounds or thereabouts.

Sorry I just saw this, count me in for a turkey (or towards oil, see below), maybe Ernie and Rox will be in as well.
As for the size we have never deep fried a larger than 14 lb turkey in fact the fryer boxes say to use under 13 lbs. I believe the breasts were 8-9, 2 yrs ago when I fried them with the small birds. I do know that 2 yrs ago we deep fried 240lbs of bird and 55lbs of beef and 35lbs of pork.
Now that we have the turkey's covered, what about the peanut oil that's the expensive part?
AND when we went 2 yrs ago to get peanut oil from the Acme all they had was quarts at high dollars and reg oil is not good for more than one turkey. 2 yrs ago peanut oil at BJ's was $53 for 5 gallons (about 1 and a third normal fryer kit pots).
I can't go to BJ's we don't have the membership anymore but will put money towards it.
Also Jodie and I will go down TUESDAY and tape off the Grillbillie area.

I called Stan at ACME and requested the 10-14 lb turkeys. I'm pretty sure we've fried larger ones in the past but changed the size just in case. So they'll be around the $20 price range per turkey. They come in boxes of 4 so he'll order 4 boxes (for a total of 16) just in case we need more than 10. He'll defrost turkey breasts for us if we need them. We just need to let him know on Thursday or Friday so he can take them out of the freezer.

Yes you need to be careful on the size of the turkey fitting in the pot so that is it covered with oil without the oil overflowing.
I would keep the turkeys to 13 pounds or get the breasts.

Just called ACME store in Woodstown and told them we will need 10 turkeys, maybe more. Fresh turkeys run about 14-16 lbs. at $1.69 lb (around $27.00). So they're a little more than the $20 I originally figured.
I know we have 8 turkeys donated so far but we need a lot more. I'm calling again on Tuesday so you still have time to post your donation here.
You'll simply give your $ donation to Matt and the turkeys will be picked up on Sunday, deep fried to perfection, skillfully carved and served steaming hot, trimmings and all, at our feast of thanks. Yummy!

Looking ahead to Del Val, I'm thinking we should let the ACME store know that we're going to want fresh turkeys again. Last year we called too late and he was unable to accomodate a large order. I think in the past we gave him a pretty accurate number of turkeys we would need and Matt collected money and picked them all up on Sunday. So if you're planning on donating a turkey, post it here and I will call them a week before the festival with an order. Figure around $20 per turkey. Wintergrass was an absolute BLAST! Can't wait till next year! The hotel is awesome, the staff is fantastic, kind and always there to help. Wilmington Winterfest was bigger and better than last year. Michelle and Kevin J. and all their volunteers created a smooth running fest.It was interesting the far places people came from--Mass., Conn., Long Island, Lower Maryland, etc.etc. Since this was a "sell-out" of rooms, they may need a bigger hotel next year ?? A month ago everybody was snowed in and this weekend included OUTDOOR Outside 'jams' and picking in 65 degree weather--nice change.

What a blast at Wilmington Wintergrass. Should be called SpringGrass though. The hotel and staff were so nice and hospitable. The most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on! Anyone have pictures of the passed out guy we used for staging our photos? His wife was even helping us. What a good sport! If you have photos, please email them. We will be there next year for sure! So good to see everyone again!

For those of you who do not recognize the name Ron is in the AFBA and worked the gate and/or parking at the AFBA festivals, NEPA fest, and OATS festival.
He is the guy in the suspenders who keeps quiet camping quiet at the OATS festival.
Dottie had problems with her eyesight so she loved to ride around on the golf cart with me when Ron and Fred were together trying to stay out of trouble.
We will miss her. She was the sweetest lady.

Speaking of Lou and Linda (I also don't do facebook either so this may be old news), for those of you who went to Loustock at Linda's mom's Peg's house in Picture Rocks may remember a kid Aaron Kelly singing there one year. He is the grandson of Peg's friend George. Aaron is now 16 and on American Idol and in the top 20. He will be singing again on Wed night.
